What is DSL?
DSL is an
acronym for Digital Subscriber
Line service. The brand name for Star Telephone Membership
Corporation's DSL service is
FireLine DSL Service.
DSL is a new technology that takes the existing
copper telephone wires already in your home, and significantly increases the
bandwidth those lines provide, by turning them into a high-speed digital
link. Basically, this means that with FireLine DSL
Service, the same telephone wires that you already have in your home
can be used to carry data to your computer at speeds up to fourteen times
faster than you get with a regular 28.8k dial-up connection. More
bandwidth equals more speed.
Why FireLine DSL?
FireLine DSL employs leading edge technology that offers you super
fast Internet connection, fast download and upload times, quick screen pops,
a constant connection to the Internet, and an affordable price. For those in
our service area who desire a faster, more convenient connection to the
Internet, FireLine DSL is your solution.
How
does FireLine DSL work?
FireLine DSL technology takes advantage of your existing phone line.
While regular phone calls are transferred at relatively low frequencies,
DSL data is transmitted at much higher
frequencies. Both types of transmissions can occur simultaneously, without
interference. A splitter placed in your home or office separates voice and
digital data. The splitter sends voice transmissions to the telephone, and
digital data transmissions to a DSL
modem (which are available through Star Telephone Membership
Corporation). Fax machines will operate as usual. In certain circumstances
filters may be needed to provide additional separation of voice and data. |
